Tennessee Titans: Evaluating options with No. 2 overall pick

The Tennessee Titans have some interesting decisions to make not only for the 2015 NFL Draft but for their course of action in having a brighter future. Posting a 2-14 record last season has many fans drawing conclusions that the Titans need to take a long look at what benefits them the most with their No. 2 overall pick in the draft. Let’s take a look at some options they have when considering the grand scheme of what they need to do in order to turn things around come next season.

The Titans desperately need to add a starting caliber pass rusher that is capable of being an instant starter. The kind of prospect that is considered to be the best of the best, someone like defensive end Leonard Williams. With his 6’5″ frame and 320 lbs. of pure aggression, he’s exactly what the Titans need to add some top-notch talent to a defensive line that ranked 31st in the league at stopping the run. Drafting Williams would be a good option for the Titans to take with their draft pick.

Another option would be to trade their No. 2 overall pick to get a ton of future draft picks and/or players that they need to bolster their team.

They could trade their pick to a team like the Philadelphia Eagles for example that have head coach Chip Kelly clamoring for drafting quarterback Marcus Mariota.

As per Phil Sheridan of ESPN in an article saying the Eagles might trade up in the draft to land Mariota, they could move draft picks and even LeSean McCoy to pull off a blockbuster move.

The Titans could land some much-needed talent and future draft picks to continue their rebuilding phase by pulling off such a deal. After all, they have plenty of holes to fill at cornerback, running back and yes, even at quarterback. Another option the Titans could do with their pick is to draft one of the top two options in the draft that can be molded into their next franchise quarterback. It would make a ton of sense for them to draft a game-changing quarterback for the benefit of the franchise.

Most mock drafts have the Tampa Bay Buccaneers taking quarterback Jameis Winston to help him become the next face of the franchise. With all eyes on what the Titans will do with their No. 2 overall pick, it wouldn’t be shocking to see them draft Mariota since he could also step right in and start winning games once he gets use to a pro-style offense. The Titans quarterback situation has been one big question mark these past few years as they need to address it once and for all.

Jake Locker was once thought to be the next franchise quarterback for the Titans but hasn’t live up to the hype. He’s too injury prone and will most likely leave via free agency since things just aren’t working out as expected. Zach Mettenberger has shown promise to deliver but still needs work on his development. He’s a few years away from being a starting caliber kind of quarterback but he had a good rookie season and has tremendous upside.

Drafting someone like Mariota could work well in Mettenberger’s case since it would give him time to deveop from the sidelines. Since the Titans plan to add some more receiving targets on offense via free agency, I’m sure they’ll draft some key weapons to give Mariota a solid supporting cast should they head that route.

Since the NFL is now all about great quarterbacks and amazing receivers, it wouldn’t hurt for the Titans to head in that direction either.

It’s hard to determine what the Titans will ultimately do with their No. 2 overall pick. I’ve always believed in that defense wins championships as they should draft Williams to have a centerpiece already in place to build around for the future.

Overall, Williams is projected to be the next big thing in the NFL and would help the Titans dramatically improve their defense. He could be the catalyst the Titans need to bounce back nicely next season. Williams would also give new defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau someone that he could coach towards greatness while building around to really start intimidating opponents on defense.
