Round 1, Pick 3: Jawaan Taylor, OT, Florida

To be honest, the Jets are more likely to trade out of this pick than to select a player at all. If Nick Bosa is off of the board, then the Jets do not take the best player available approach, but rather take the best player at a position of need. With the third overall pick, the Jets select Jawaan Taylor, offensive tackle from the University of Florida as they continue to overhaul their offensive line.

Already this offseason, the Jets have cut Spencer Long and traded for Kelechi Osemele in order to attempt to shore up their offensive line. With Kelvin Beachum and Brandon Shell both on the last year of their contracts, it would be a wise investment for New York to take the best offensive lineman in the draft.

After a spending spree in free agency that included adding Le’Veon Bell and C.J. Mosley and new uniforms, the Jets now look the part of a team ready to compete for a playoff spot in 2019. However, if the Jets have dreams of capitalizing on their added talent, protecting Sam Darnold must become their highest priority.

Adding Taylor and Osemele in the same offseason would be a sign that the Jets are serious about competing with division rival and Super Bowl champion New England Patriots. Even if Quinnen Williams is on the board, Taylor is the necessary selection.
