3. Depth at Wide Receiver

The first area of weakness for Minnesota leading into the upcoming season lies within the wide receiver spot, which was once one of the most feared portions of the Vikings offense in past years.

For the past few seasons especially, the receiving duo of Adam Thielen and Stefon Diggs has been a problem for opposing defenses in the passing game with both wide receivers having the ability to both break out at any point throughout the season.

This offseason and leading into the 2020 NFL season, however, one half of that duo is now gone following the departure of Diggs in a trade with the Buffalo Bills, leaving Thielen to lead the charge of the receiving unit this year and beyond.

During the offseason, the depth at wide receiver became a larger area of weakness within Minnesota’s depth chart, although it is a position that could ultimately be carried by one or two players without much trouble.

The Vikings did start to address that need at wideout by drafting Justin Jefferson out of LSU in the 2020 NFL Draft, but there could still be some other names available that Minnesota could try and go out and bring into the group on the receiving end of the pass attack.

Outside of Thielen on the Vikings’ depth chart, Minnesota holds players such as Olabisi Johnson, Jefferson, Chad Beebe, Alexander Hollins and others within that spot. There could be a few breakout candidates on that side of the ball and at that position, but one weakness within this Vikings offense is no doubt the depth at wide receiver.

It will be interesting to see if Mike Zimmer and company go out and try and add a wide receiver via the trade market or through free agency, but this receiving group could no question use some beefing up before the 2020 campaign kicks off.
